Does Porcelain Countertop Scratch? The Big Difference Between Matte and Glossy Surfaces
The first thing a customer asks when they walk into the shop is always the same: “Will it scratch if a knife touches it?” The honest answer depends on the surface.
The truth is: Laminam’s matte and textured surfaces (such as Natural, Calce, Bush-Hammered) are at a level of 7-8 on the Mohs hardness scale. That’s just one step below diamond. On a matte surface, take the sharpest steel knife, chop onions and meat directly on the stone. The knife’s edge will dull, but nothing will happen to the stone.
However, polished surfaces require caution! Due to the glassy polished layer on glossy porcelains, you cannot cut meat directly on them with a knife. You can cut, but if you look towards the light, you might see micro-capillary marks. Therefore, if you’ve chosen a glossy model, you must use a cutting board on the countertop. Honest craftsmanship requires stating this upfront.

Let’s move on to the second most feared topic: “I took the tray out of the oven, where do I put it?” You will place it directly on the countertop.
Take a 250-degree boiling hot tray from the oven, bring it and drop it right onto the stone. Fire won’t affect it. Since there’s no artificial resin, epoxy, or anything similar inside the stone, it won’t yellow or crack from heat. The hassle of searching for trivets is over.
As for stains… Kitchen problems never end; tomato paste spills, wine drips, lemon juice runs. Old marbles would absorb that acid, leaving stains like a sponge. Laminam is 100% non-porous. Porcelain is very hard, but its flexibility tolerance is low. If a stone master installs this 12mm slab on top of an ordinary wooden cabinet with a hollow underside, that stone will crack one day. The cabinet will sag over time, leaving the stone unsupported in the middle. If something heavy falls on it, it will shatter. The stone gets a bad reputation due to inadequate craftsmanship.
